Corina Vlădescu: collections with a cool vibe
It is so nice and so cozy in Corina Vlădescu studio that I could stay here for an entire day enjoying a cup of coffee and the incredible view. And, of course, indulging myself with some outfit trials from her latest collections. For an hour, I tested the elegant & pop art side of me (with a cool blazer and a mini skirt), I tried to be serious in an embroided shirt and some leather pants and I played gangsta in (my favourite combo) a sweatshirt and cargo pants. And I promised to come back for more. I talked to Corina about the latest collections, about signature pieces, about the challenges of a designer nowadays and the movies in which her pieces could make a good role. Enjoy!
Corina Vlădescu pieces are available on… corinavladescu.com, at the studio (Delea Veche 28A street), molecule-f.com and selected stockists nationwide and internationally.
Your first fashion crush story was related to…
… Kate Moss. She was huge in the nineties when I was a teenager. I had just discovered the fashion magazines and I was absolutely hooked. My father was travelling travel a lot for work and I only asked for these. He is still telling everyone how he had to carry those magazines which were heavier than his bags. But I read them so consciously and they were my drive to get into fashion.
The moodboard for your 2020 collection includes…
… female artists, contemporary mainly. I am a huge supporter of women in art and I believe they are so undermined. Lately I dug into female painters and I am so inspired. Their art is very personal and has a certain sensibility.
The most extravagant thing you wish to design is…
Extravagant is not a word I like very much as it exudes excess and I loathe that. I love the idea of designing pieces which are both original, long lasting and wearable. Fashion is wearable art so my dream is to make it ethical.
The icon piece that will always be in your collections is…
… a good dress. One that’s not too dressy, nor too casual, feminine but not too sugary and ultimately has the want factor. I call that when you put it on and everywhere you go all the girls ask you where it’s from. For me the ideal dress is the Ondine – http://www.corinavladescu.com/browse.html?q=Ondine.
If your collection is classic movie, this would be…
… Almost Famous, 2000. Not a classic per se, but a staple for me. It ticks all my soft spots: rock’ n ‘roll, the 70’s and a laid back cool vibe.
The perfect TV series for your collection would be…
… Vinyl, 2016. For all of the above again. I was so sad it got discontinued after the first season. I used to say that I love it so much what if they don’t produce a second season like an irony and it’s exactly what happened.
The biggest challenge for a designer nowadays is…
… to make the customer understands the huge difference between high street pieces and designer outfits, but also between corporate designer and small self financed brand. I am in a stage where I feel overwhelmed by so many clothes and so much waste that for some years now I produce non seasonal pieces. Luxe quality, signature styles – these are forever. You look at them and you know they are Corina Vlădescu. When you buy them it’s an investment in a piece, not a trend, a fad. I produce limited amounts, no stock, no waste and that is why we don’t have seasonal sales.
We need fashion in our life because…
… fashion shapes our inside on the outside. It speaks without words about who we are, what we like and creates a beautiful universal language which transcends time and space.
About Corina Vlădescu we should know…
… I am so grateful to be River’s mom. And that I also wanted to be an actress but my love for fashion won.
