Young Blood at Art Safari 2023: meet the young artist Marta Matiolli
Art is like a pair of lenses: it is important to keep it close to see the world as the artist imagined. And the best way we can see the beauty in our world we living in is through the lenses of the contemporary art. This series is about the young artists presented in Young Blood 2.0 section, at Art Safari 2023. Today, an interview with the young artist Marta Matiolli.

The 3 major themes that you usually (constantly) capture in your works are… Why?
I always think about my art as being fluid and present, and of course, there are a few lenses you should wear when you watch them. The first one is about the relation we have with the rapidly developing technology, this is an umbrella for more derivations and streams. Another key point is related to social media platforms, the mediated feelings, the false sense of closeness, the extension of our bodies, think of it like a window of vulnerability. The reality you’ll find in my works is a hybrid of materiality, made of organic and digital connections.
“We’re inside of what we make, and it’s inside of us. We’re living in a world of connections — and it matters which ones get made and unmade.” – Donna J. Haraway
The main medium I use is digital but I always had a huge drive to work in more than one medium, translating my ideas into objects, drawings, paintings and wherever my thoughts may take me, my practice is as eclectic as my identity.
The 3D / digital environment allows me to create an alternative reality that has the same premises but not the same rules. It allows me to express the dimension of my imagination, created from the problems we face, an intense connection /literally and figuratively.
Your art work that we should pay attention at Art Safari 2023 is…
The art work you should pay attention at Art Safari 2023 is “Rootless”, a 3D piece recently exhibited at the Budapest Art Market, where you’ll see a tree made of chains in an infinite desert.
The concept is built from the idea of connection and human nature, the tree is and always has been a symbol of life and each node is equally important in maintaining balance. This approach is linked to the possibilities of a scenario about a future that is uncertain, a desert space where our actions have come to an end. I think that this state of uncertainty has been chained to our behaviour for some time, due to the fact that we live in a rapidly developing society, the future is now more blurred and unpredictable than ever and we are inevitably connected in the sea of questions.
“Eight billion people by mid-November. Eight billion personal realms falling into place. Eight billion pairs of eyes. Seven thousand and one hundred languages translating every freeze frame we’re glimpsing. Each of us with its own symbolic and obscure system of interpretation. “ – Teodora Rosu.
About you, as an artist, we should know that…
My artistic practice developed over time, but an important factor was the beginning of my collaboration with Kinema Ikon, the earliest new media art group in Romania. I’ve always been sustained in this endeavor and I’m always grateful. Apart from my artistic practice, I’m actively involved in supporting local art, being a member of Atelier 35 and also the gallery operator of Strata, willing to create a suitable environment for artistic expression. By having double origins and a rich history of changing places, somewhere between Romania and Italy, I had difficulties finding a sense of belonging, but art always felt like home.
Romanian contemporary art is worth investing in it because…
Because it’s indispensable, investing is an important part in creating a more favourable context for the development of contemporary art.
