Nothing better for the summer than beautiful silk & linen pieces with floral prints. Well, not any flowers, but some huge, amazing flowers, delicately painted by the artist Stephen Doherty. I am talking, of course, about COS x Stephen Doherty: the most beautiful collection for the summer will be soon in stores.

“I like the impact one flower has on its own, so it was important that every print I created for this collection allowed each one the space to breathe”, said the artist Stephen Doherty. 

About the collection

The capsule collection is created in collaboration between Doherty and the brand’s design director Karin Gustafsson. The 17-piece men’s and women’s capsule, titled “COS x Stephen Doherty”, is designed to capture the moment in summer when flowers are in heady bloom. “It celebrates the beauty of nature in its most exquisite form”, says the brand of the collection, which features limited-edition ink-and-water floral works by Doherty. “Strength in softness” is how Stephen Doherty (he/him) describes his watercolour flower studies. For an unassuming artist who creates powerful art through building washes with ink and water, the analogy couldn’t be more appropriate.

Doherty’s favourite bloom is the fragile-petalled anemone flower. “They’re so beautiful and light, I also love their association with hope and anticipation” he says. The capsule collection – which “embraces the synergy between art and fashion”, as COS describes – comprises effortless pieces inspired by the ease of summer, from flower-adorned shirts to diaphanous dresses and scarves. 

About the artist 

The Manchester-based British artist Stephen Doherty is best known for his images of flowers, a fascination which began while he was artist-in-residence at Aamir Art House in Porvorim, Goa, in 2018. 

Doherty studied at Central Saint Martins and is an alumnus of the Sarabande Foundation; Established by Lee McQueen. Previous clients and collaborations include; SHOWstudio, Gucci, Maison Martin Margiela, Liberty of London, Jo Malone and Y3. In 2019 Stephen was awarded NEW WAVE: Creative by the British Fashion Council. Stephen is a British artist based in London. His works have been exhibited at Somerset House, London (2014), The Mass Gallery Tokyo (2017), SHOWstudio, London (2019) and the Sarabande Foundation, London (2020)
