Keep walking on the red carpet
What’s the best kept secret of Hollywood? Some people would say the incredible diets, some would bet on the perfect skin creams brought from the sea depths and the tabloids will always have something to say about crazy messy love affairs… But I will say, for sure: the secret of their incredible and steady smile consists in… their shoes. Of course: otherwise, how do you think that all those actresses could stay on high heels, smiling, for an entire night of Oscar Awards on the red carpet?!

In Bucharest, at Casa Frumoasa store, the only store in Bucharest where you can find the magic shoes signed Ferragamo.
Which kind of shoes am I talking about here? That kind that made Marilyn Monroe declared “I don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot”. That kind that made Audrey Hepburn to pay frequent visits on Rodeo Drive and Greta Garbo and Ava Gardner to look incredible beautiful and elegant every day. That kind of shoes wore by Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore or Eva Longoria at all the important events on the red carpet. Yes, I am talking about Salvatore Ferragamo, “the shoemaker of the stars”. Back in the late 1920, before most of the big names in Italian fashion were even born, Salvatore Ferragamo was crafting beautiful shoes for the most famous feet in Hollywood.
“The world stars do not come to my salon to buy my reputation”, said Salvatore Ferragamo back then. “They come to buy shoes that fit and flatter them.” In an era when many women squeezed their feet into the smallest size bearable, Ferragamo studied the anatomy of the foot, insisting that “high fashion and comfort are not incompatible”. From natural materials like cork, wood, raffia, synthetic resins, metal or even plastic, Ferragamo used everything possible to express his creativity. And he’s right, after 100 years since he started to make shoes: it is still some of the most comfortable pairs that anybody can try.
“I have divided the women who have come to me into three categories: the Venus, the Cinderella and the aristocrat”, Ferragamo said. And, no matter in which category I might place myself, I know I am pretty pleased that tradition continues, years after these years and allows me to wear high heels all night long. And I couldn’t wait to see the new collections in town, to feel, to try and to buy them (in Bucharest, at Casa Frumoasa store, the only store in Bucharest where you can find the magic shoes signed Ferragamo).
My personal secret? Well… if you are ever go to Florence, do not forget to pay a visit at Palazzo Spini-Feroni, a museum dedicated to the history of the “shoemaker of the stars”, Salvatore Ferragamo (read here about it).
To watch: ‘Coming Home to Hollywood’, a short film starring Ethan Peck – grandson of silver screen legend Gregory Peck – that evokes Salvatore Ferragamo’s journey to America and his roots in Hollywood’s Golden. It celebrates the 100 years of Ferragamo history in Hollywood.
