3 hotels for wine lovers

Italy, France or Portugal? No matter which country is my (usual) favorite; when it comes for wine and food, I could simply close my eyes and put the finger on the map. But, let’s go through again: I will need a place romantic, perfectly situated in the middle of the green surroundings, with an excellent cuisine and… not at all connexion to the technology. Here are my personal 3 choices:

Hôtel de Tourrel, France, Provence, Saint-Rémy-De-Provence. Set in a 17th-centyury palace in the center of the old village, the hotel is perfect for a summer retreat. The Provençal town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is synonymous with Van Gogh, who found inspiration in its light and surrounding landscapes. Now, the little town has become quite cosmopolitan with its world-class restaurants and design shops. (7 rooms, architecture by Margot Stängle, interior design Margot Stängle & Ralph Hüsgen)

I would love here:

  • The fairytale vibe of the place. Nestled in a 400-year-old historic mansion, Hôtel de Tourrel underwent a two-year restoration process to create this petite luxury hotel. The noble de Tourrel d’Almeran family’s former home, original features have been charmingly mixed in the interiors with furniture by ClassiCon designers Eileen Gray and Konstantin Grcic.
  • The gourmet promise: the hotel has an innovative nouveau Mediterranean restaurant and private dining space. Plus a floor-to-ceiling wine rack, the exclusive wine boutique and bar specializes in rare wines and vintage varietals.

Hotel Eremito, Italy, Parrano, Umbria. Eremito hotel is surrounded by 3,000 hectares of protected natural reserve in Umbria. Considered the spiritual focal point of the country thanks to wonderful monasteries in the area, Umbria is a fitting choice for this Italian eco-resort. What I would love?

  • The fact that the rooms are even called “Celluzze”, in the spirit of those ancient monk quarters (and they have no TV and no air-conditioning).
  • The promise of a delicious vegetarian menu, also inspired by ancient monastic traditions, with ingredients from local organic farms. And, of course, local wines.
  • The spa, which features a heated pool dug from the rock and a stone steam room.

Design & Wine Hotel, Portugal, Caminha. The hotel is situated on the the banks of the Minho Estuary in Camhina, a historic Portuguese port town on the Spanish border. It is an ecologically sustainable retreat, which blends art, technology and local heritage with its contemporary art gallery and distinctive regional wines. What I would love here?

  • The rich enoteca, which offers a selection of region “vino verde”, young wine made from the local Alvarinho and Loureiro grapes.
  • The unique design of each room, imagined by the award-winning Portuguese designers, with influences from painting, graphic design, street art or fashion.
